Training on cross culture communication and ways of working

I. Introduction

Plan International is an independent development and humanitarian organization that advances children’s rights and equality for girls. As an independent development and humanitarian organisation, we work alongside children, young people, our supporters and partners to tackle the root causes of the challenges facing girls and all vulnerable children. We support children’s rights from birth until they reach adulthood and enable children to prepare for and respond to crises and adversity. We drive changes in practice and policy at local, national and global levels using our reach, experience and knowledge. For over 80 years we have been building powerful partnerships for children, and we are active in over 75 countries.

II. Background

Plan International plans to offer cross-cultural communications skills/ways of working training course in March/April 2022 for its Asia-Pacific region staff (APAC). This training will consist of approximately 25 participants based in different countries in Asia.

The event would be undertaken remotely (online facilitation), given the on-going COVID-19 pandemic that has a profound impact on the ways of working for the organization.

Regional office in Bangkok serves as a knowledge management platform that works closely with Global Hub to provide support to different programs/projects implemented in 15 countries in Asia-Pacific region.

In the past few years, APAC regional Hub has recruited a culturally diverse workforce who are based in different countries in the region.

It is our intent to strengthen communication and management skills in order to build a stronger, unified team by developing a deeper understanding of cross-cultural issues and its impact in the workplace.

This TOR, therefore, is to seek for consultant service on supporting Plan International Asia-Pacific region staff on leading cross-cultural communications skills/ways of working training.

III. Core themes to cover in the training course include:

  • Understanding the dynamics of different Cultures where Plan operates in Asia-Pacific Region and with Global Hub(UK)
  • Improving cross-cultural communication in the workplace (in all situations)
  • Managing conflicts and finding win-win resolutions
  • Team building – increasing participation to achieve common goals
  • Fostering accountability and assertiveness between cultures

IV. Objectives of the TOR

The consultant is expected to design and facilitate cross-cultural communications skills/ways of working training for 25 participants (Plan staff).

The consultant is required to incorporate teaching methodologies that take into account different learning styles, cultural, and language barriers. Given the wide range of educational background, years of experience, and a workforce that spans generations and locations, this training must consider field-tested scenarios and provide valuable take-home applications.

The training shall incorporate the following principles:

  • Highly participatory, interactive, inclusive and experiential for all participants
  • Incorporates current and best practices in cross-cultural communication and management skills especially working remotely
  • Takes into account/allows for adapting to Plan’s organizational culture
  • Facilitates personalization/unique experiences for participants (as opposed to a generalized ‘one size fits all’), and
  • Sets the stage for ongoing self-development, providing forward-looking opportunity for skills, behaviours and supportive systems to continue to improve well after the training is completed.
