deCOALonize Campaign – is a campaign pushing for a green and sustainable energy future for Kenya, which the Natural Justice Kenya Office hosts.

The deCOALonize Campaign aims to provide information to local communities, policymakers, academics, and civil society on coal alternatives and embrace clean energy in Kenya. It was created by a coalition of environmental and social justice advocates concerned about the increasing interest in Kenya in coal power production and exploration.

Who are we looking for?

deCOALonize Campaign is looking for a creative and innovative Communications Officer who will be responsible for the implementation and monitoring of deCOALonize’s communications strategies and plans, developing internal and external communications products, disseminating insights and knowledge pieces while creating and managing content for deCOALonize’s digital platforms. The successful candidate will lead efforts in developing clear and powerful messages, utilizing multiple channels tailored to target audiences at country, regional, and global levels. Working closely with the Campaigns Coordinator, the Communications Officer will raise the visibility of the campaign while supporting and amplifying its work.

Key duties and responsibilities:

• Develop the communications strategies for external and internal communication.

• Lead the development and implementation of communications plans in support of the campaign’s strategic plan.

• Disseminate knowledge products and deCOALonize updates to internal and external audiences through multiple channels including the deCOALonize website, social media, newsletters, and mailing lists.

• Develop communication materials such as blogs, press releases, op-eds, talking points, speeches, videos, and web materials in line with deCOALonize’s strategic plan.

• Maintains a repository of videos and photos for use by deCOALonize.

• Lead the development and execution of a digital strategy to ensure engagement with online audiences (website and social media).

• Coordinating communications activities and events.

• Advises the campaign on trends, news developments, or changing circumstances that may impact deCOALonize and its work.

• Provide input into fundraising and project design phases to identify and include appropriate communication activities for respective projects.

• Develop and submit monthly communications reports.

• Participate in all relevant deCOALonize meetings, including the communications working group meetings and assist the Communications Working Group Focal Point when required.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, development studies, or related field

• Minimum of four (4) years experience in environmental rights, human rights and social justice issues.

• Proven media contacts (locally or internationally).

• Ability to turn around outputs into media products such as human-interest stories from the communities we work in/with.

• Ability to organize both internal and external events for the campaign.

• Demonstrated success in delivering high-quality communications, products, or tools targeting a diverse range of audiences.

• A proven ability to develop graphic, visual representations of information, data or knowledge e.g. infographics

• Experience in creating web content, managing social media pages on campaign activities, outputs and plans.

• Proven experience in conducting audience research

• Proficiency in building strong working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.

• Innovative thinker, enjoys developing and testing new ideas and ways of problem-solving and driving engagement

• Exceptional planning and organizational skills, with an ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple demands and competing priorities, while maintaining high-quality standards.

• Experience working with campaigns or movements would be an added advantage
