Terms of Reference: Simultaneous Interpretation Services for CIVICUS Communities of Practice At CIVICUS

CIVICUS is in search of remote simultaneous interpretation services in Spanish, French, and Portuguese. The service would include a long-term agreement for a period of 6 months, starting 1st January 2022 and ending 30 June 2022**.

Introduction to CIVICUS

CIVICUS is a global alliance of civil society organisations and activists dedicated to strengthening citizen action and civil society for a more just, inclusive and sustainable world. We do this by defending civic freedoms and democratic values; strengthening the power of people to oraganise, mobilise and take action; and empowering a more accountable, effective and innovative civil society. We strive to promote marginalised voices, especially from the Global South, and have more than 12000 members in more than 180 countries. 32% of these members are individual activists under 30 and organisations interested in youth and children.

Purpose

The purpose of the proposed consultancy is to provide remote simultaneous interpretation for multiple sessions of 60 – 90 – 120 minutes. The sessions are highly collaborative and participatory virtual events covering a range of project identified themes and outcomes. Simultaneous interpretation services will be distributed among three CIVICUS teams/projects, namely: CIVICUS Youth, Resourcing Civil Society, Solidarity Fund and Membership and Networks to foster practical application of inclusive projects.

Scope of work and deliverables

Clear and accurate interpretation is needed for each session in two or more different languages, keeping in mind that the participants are activists and CIVICUS members who engage on a wide variety of social justice agendas. Simultaneous interpretation should support the efforts of trainers and facilitators towards enabling participants to understand the tools, learnings, and skills being shared during the sessions.

1. The service provider will support the CIVICUS Secretariat by providing simultaneous interpretation services from/into up to three languages, namely, Spanish, French, and/or Portuguese during remote sessions.
2. The service provider will offer teams who are experienced at multilingual online sessions.
3. The service provider must be solution orientated and remain flexible, in case the session runs overtime or if the participants require that we move platforms.
4. Along with the CIVICUS coordination team member, the service provider will coordinate logistical aspects of providing simultaneous interpretation, including but not limited to, sending their invoices, ensuring they have all the meeting details and logins, etc.
5. The service provider will coordinate all logistics of the interpreter’s team before and during the sessions.
6. The service provider shall, upon receipt of request from the CIVICUS Secretariat, confirm availability of simultaneous interpretation and assign interpreters accordingly.

The consultancy is expected to take place over a 6-months period between 1st January 2022 and 30 June** 2022.

EXPERIENCE

The consultancy will require the following skills and experience:

• Technical knowledge, skills, and expertise in remote simultaneous interpretation within the social justice field.
• Experience delivering simultaneous interpretation for virtual participatory programmes.
• Experience interpreting for diverse groups with a wide range of subject matter
• Excellent ability to provide clear and accurate remote interpretation
• Fluency in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese
